Susan Avishai
Bio
Born in Montreal, Susan has lived in Jerusalem, New York, Boston, Roanoke, Ottawa and now Toronto. She has had solo exhibitions of her work in those cities and participated in numerous other juried and group shows in Canada and abroad, winning many awards.
She began her art life one tender night at age two when her father’s pen dropped from his pocket as he bent over to tuck her in and the sheets became her canvas. She claims to have been trying to return to abstract expressionism ever since.
These new collage and oil stick paintings are getting closer. Using any and all torn bits that she finds from junk mail to fine handmade papers, she builds sensuous Gaudi-like texture reminiscent of bubbles, primordial soups, magnetic energy, or nerve endings.
It is the unexpected which surfaces spontaneously from some imagery in her subconscious, and hopefully conjoins with that of the viewer to invite a dialogue.
